17 May Jeweled Pine Tree Block
Jessica 0 644
When this block is isolated, it looks like pine trees viewed from the ground looking up. When you put several of them together you get mini-pinwheels and large parallelograms that look like gems. The pine trees remind me of camping and that's what summers in Alaska are all about. Camping, fishing, gardening, and anything else we can think of to do outside.FabricFabric A - TanFabric B - Light Green..
17 May Blooming Flower/Pinwheels and Hourglass Block
Jessica 0 448
This block reminds me of a flower when it's isolated. When it's in a group, I notice pinwheels and hourglasses. With such happy spring/summer images (flowers, pinwheel toys, and an hourglass to remind us of cooking or not to waste the wonderful weather), I thought it would be perfect for May's free block pattern.FabricFabric A - Dark GreenFabric B - Lime Green AccuQuilt GO! 02 Apr Mosaic Block
Julie 0 545
I love to create blocks in EQ 7 which utilize the AccuQuilt GO! dies. Blocks will be added to the Block category regularly to build a useful resource as a quick reference for your quilting. I try to use the GO! dies exclusively for their accuracy as well as to save my hands, back and shoulders. Whenever possible I'll include the dies for both an eight inch block and a 12 inch block. AccuQuilt GO! ..
10 Sep Pattern Weights for Quilting
Julie 0 8450
I love pattern weights, they have so many uses. They’re sold to hold pattern pieces in place when making clothing, but they come in handy for quilting as well.Dritz Fabric Pattern Weights come in sets of four and can be purchased at many quilt shops, Joann’s and Amazon. I’m sure there are many other places to buy them as well. They come in purple, pink and green to add some color to your sewing ro..
04 Jun Spinning Organizer
Julie 0 275
I like to have my thread scissors, seam ripper and small rotary cutter to the right of my sewing machine for quick access. My pin cushion, pencil and various other accessories, that I'm using at the time, end up adding to the necessary clutter.I've used a tabletop carousel for art supplies, for many years. Inspiration hit the other day. There just so happened to be an empty carousel, waiting to be..
15 Jan Half Square Triangles
Jessica 0 790
Half square triangles are a basic quilt block unit so it is good to have some quick and accurate techniques to make them. Working with triangles can be tricky since one or more of the edges will be cut on the bias, which is a 45 degree angle to the fabric's crosswise and lengthwise grain. The bias edge will be very stretchy which could easily distort the shape.Accurate cutting, an accurate scant 1..
19 Dec Partial Seams Tutorial
Jessica 0 779
Partial Seams are used when you need to join pieces around a center square. Basically you are going to sew a partial seam on one piece of fabric and come back to it later. The partial seam helps you line up the subsequent pieces of fabric without having to do a set-in seam.If you'd like to follow along with this tutorial. Cut four light green 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" strips and one dark green 4 1/2" x 4 1/..
24 Jul Back-to-Front Binding
Jessica 0 886
Back-to-Front binding is a quick binding technique where you make the quilt backing big enough to fold over to the front of the quilt and become your binding.Quick Tips Before We BeginMake sure your backing is at least 2" bigger than your quilt top before you start quilting. This will leave enough for the Back-to-Front binding.Avoid quilting off of your quilt top into the extra batting and backing..
22 Jul Batting Basics
Jessica 0 831
DefinitionBatting is the filling used in quilts and quilted projects. It is composed of many different fibers and comes in the shape of batts, mats, or sheets which is where it gets its name. It can be bought in pre-cut sizes or by-the-yard. Sometimes it is also called padding or wadding. It serves to give your quilting definition, adds dimension/thickness to your quilted project and determines ho..
06 Feb The Calico Cat Quilt Shop in Hawaii
Julie 0 1122
It was short notice. I had three days to prepare and pack, but I wasn't going to miss this trip. Two weeks in Hawaii in Frebruary, who could resist. I gave some thought to bringing my sewing machine but decided to soak up the sun and culture instead.Quilting is a way of life, so one of my first stops was at The Calico Cat quilt shop.
